Request an AppointmentWhat Is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is an injectable medication that, combined with mindful eating and exercise, helps control blood sugar and supports significant weight loss. It belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic GLP-1, a natural hormone your body releases after eating to regulate appetite and blood sugar.
How Does Semaglutide Work for Weight Loss?
GLP-1 slows how quickly your stomach empties, so you feel full longer and are satisfied with smaller portions. Semaglutide also signals the brain’s appetite centers to reduce hunger and cravings, and it prompts your pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar rises. Together, these effects make it easier to eat less and steadily lose weight.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Semaglutide may be right for adults who have struggled to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, particularly those with a higher BMI or weight-related health concerns. It is not recommended if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, because laboratory studies have linked these medications to thyroid tumors in rats. It is also not used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Be sure to tell your provider about any diabetes medications you take, including insulin, so your treatment can be coordinated safely.
Possible Side Effects
Some of the more common side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea or constipation
These side effects tend to increase as doses go up, which is why your dose is raised gradually. We use a longer-acting form of semaglutide, which tends to cause fewer side effects than short-acting versions.
How Long Does It Take to Lose Weight on Semaglutide?
Many patients feel the appetite-reducing effects after their first dose and begin to lose weight within the first two weeks. Everyone’s journey is different, and how much weight you want to lose will determine the length of your program.
