Our maternity care combines the personal, educational approach of midwifery care with the medical expertise of our obstetrics physicians. Who Will I See at My Prenatal Appointments?
Prenatal appointments are generally with our nurse-midwives, but you may also see our nurse practitioners or physicians. Who Will Be There for My Birth?
One of our certified nurse-midwives or physicians will attend your birth at Swedish Medical Center. High-risk births often include both a physician and a midwife, giving you the benefit of both perspectives.
Can I Get an Ultrasound at Your Office?
Yes. Ultrasounds are typically performed at your first prenatal appointment to confirm your due date and again around 20 weeks to check your baby’s anatomy and growth. Additional ultrasounds may be recommended based on medical need.
Can I Still See a Midwife If I Plan a Cesarean Birth?
Absolutely. Nurse-midwives are well qualified to care for women planning cesarean births and can assist the physician in the operating room.
What Pain Management Options Are Available?
Our providers primarily deliver at Swedish Medical Center, whose labor and delivery unit offers:
- Hydrotherapy (water labor)
- Birth balls and freedom of movement
- IV pain medications
- Labor epidurals

What Kind of Fetal Monitoring Can I Expect in Labor?
For low-risk mothers, we offer Doppler monitoring, also called intermittent auscultation, which allows you to move freely between checks. The hospital also offers wireless portable monitors that let you walk, change positions, and even use the labor tub while your baby’s heart rate is monitored.
Care After Your Baby Arrives
Our care continues after delivery with postpartum visits to check your physical recovery, emotional well-being, and breastfeeding progress. We also help you plan for contraception and return to routine well woman care. If you notice signs of postpartum depression or anxiety, please reach out; support is available.

Call as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test. Most first visits occur around 8 weeks of pregnancy and include an ultrasound.

Can I have a water labor?
Yes. Swedish Medical Center offers hydrotherapy during labor, and wireless monitors can be used in the labor tub.
