What Is Gynecology?

Gynecology is the field of medicine focused on women’s health, especially the reproductive system, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina, and breasts. Gynecologists diagnose and treat conditions affecting these organs and provide preventive care to keep women healthy at every stage of life. Many gynecologists, including our physicians, also practice obstetrics and are known as OB/GYNs.

Gynecologic Procedures and Surgery

When medication or lifestyle changes are not enough, our physicians offer procedures ranging from simple in-office treatments to minimally invasive surgery, including colposcopy and LEEP, IUD and implant placement, in-office permanent birth control, hysteroscopy, D&C, endometrial ablation, and laparoscopic surgery. Minimally invasive techniques use small incisions, which typically mean less pain and a faster recovery than traditional surgery.

Who Offers Gynecologic Care?

Both physicians and advanced practice clinicians provide gynecologic care. Physicians who specialize in the field are gynecologists, or OB/GYNs if they also provide obstetric care. Nurse practitioners and certified nurse-midwives work alongside physicians and can perform most routine gynecologic services, including exams, screenings, contraception, and treatment of common conditions. At our practice, this team approach means you are always connected to the right level of care.

Who Should See a Gynecologist?

Every woman should have a gynecologic provider she sees regularly. Reproductive health issues can develop at any age, whether or not you are sexually active. Most experts recommend a first gynecologic visit between ages 13 and 15, followed by annual well woman exams throughout adulthood. Teens can also receive confidential contraception counseling.

What Is a Gynecologic Appointment Like?

A gynecologic appointment is much like any other medical visit. It begins with a short check-in, vital signs, and a review of your medical history. Your provider then sits down with you to discuss your concerns and may perform a pelvic exam, breast exam, or lab tests as needed.

At the end of your visit, your provider will recommend any necessary treatment, such as a prescription or procedure, and schedule follow-up care. You can review results and message your care team anytime through our patient portal.
