What Is a Certified Nurse-Midwife?

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are advanced practice registered nurses with graduate-level education in midwifery and women’s health. They specialize in individualized care for pregnant women and provide education and emotional support throughout pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period.

Nurse-midwives most commonly work in hospitals and collaborate with physicians for high-risk pregnancy care. They also care for women of all ages outside of pregnancy, providing well woman care, contraception, menopause care, and treatment of common gynecologic problems. Nurse-midwives can diagnose and treat medical conditions, prescribe medication, deliver babies, and assist with cesarean births.

The Midwifery Approach to Pregnancy and Birth

Midwifery care centers on the belief that pregnancy and birth are normal, healthy life events. Our midwives take time to get to know you, answer your questions, and respect your preferences for labor and delivery. That may mean:

  • Longer, conversational prenatal visits focused on education and shared decision-making
  • Support for natural, unmedicated birth if that is your goal
  • Freedom of movement in labor and options like hydrotherapy and birth balls
  • Access to epidurals and IV pain medication whenever you want them
  • Guidance on breastfeeding, recovery, and adjusting to life with a newborn

Because our midwives practice alongside our obstetrics physicians, you enjoy the personal attention of midwifery care with physician expertise immediately available if complications arise.

Will I See a Midwife at My Prenatal Appointments?

Prenatal appointments are generally with our nurse-midwives, but you may also see our nurse practitioners or physicians. This team approach helps you get to know the providers who may be with you at your birth. Learn more about prenatal visits, ultrasounds, and fetal monitoring on our maternity care page.

Can I Still See a Midwife If I Plan a Cesarean Birth?

Absolutely. Nurse-midwives are well qualified to care for women planning a cesarean birth and can assist the physician in the operating room, so you keep the continuity of care you have built throughout your pregnancy.

Can I Get Pain Medicine in Labor If I See a Midwife?

Yes. Our providers deliver at Swedish Medical Center, whose labor and delivery unit offers hydrotherapy (water labor), birth balls, IV pain medications, and labor epidurals. You are also welcome to hire a doula for additional labor support. Visit our patient education page for a virtual tour of the hospital.
