What is a Midwife?

Certified Nurse-Midwives are independent care providers. They specialize in individualized care for pregnant women and provide support and education throughout the process. Nurse-Midwives most commonly work in hospitals and may collaborate with physicians for high-risk pregnancy care. Nurse-Midwives also provide care for women of all ages. They provide well-woman care, contraception, menopausal care, and treatment of general health problems. Nurse-Midwives are able to diagnose and treat medical conditions, prescribe medication, deliver babies, and assist with cesarean section births.

Will I be seeing a midwife at my prenatal appointments?

Prenatal appointments are generally with our nurse-midwife, but may also be with our nurse practitioner or physician.

Can I still see a midwife if I plan a cesarean birth?

Absolutely! Nurse-Midwives are well qualified to care for women who plan cesarean birth and assist a physician in the operating room.

Can I get pain medicine in labor if I see a midwife?

Swedish Medical Center’s labor and delivery unit offers hydrotherapy (water labor), birth balls, IV pain medications, and labor epidurals. You are also welcome to hire a doula for labor support.
